Since the late 1990s the park has been cleaned up with the efforts of community groups and has undergone initial capital improvements that provided the framework for the creation of the playground.
Before the 19th century, the area now know as Seaside Nature Park was farmland and had a few established clam shacks. The Staten Island waterfront became a major enclave for hotels in the late 1800s, most of which were abandoned in the early 20th century and vacant until they were destroyed in the 1970s.
The natural beauty of the site has been preserved and enhanced with native plantings and preservation and expansion of its wetlands. The coastal area is habitat to sea creatures such as horseshoe crabs, mussels, oysters, fiddler crabs as well as many fish and bird species. The existing views provided the inspiration for the maritime themed play structures as it is within the Great Kills Harbor with its marinas and views of the water. The playground design includes classic play value features that provide active and passive recreation for children and adults and incorporates green building materials to promote environmental responsibility.
