Due to be completed in 2007, The New York Times Building is a joint venture between The New York Times Company and Forest City Ratner Companies.
The New York Times will own and occupy the lower half of the building. With 75 percent of the building leased to date, Forest City Ratner owns floors 28 through 52 as well as 21,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor.
The design by Renzo Piano Building Workshop/FXFOWLE Architects incorporates a transparent glass tower screened by planes of glazed ceramic tubes that seem to float above the street. Among its energy efficient features are an advanced sun-shading system, floor to ceiling glass, increased ceiling heights, efficient lighting and mechanical systems, displaced ventilation, extensive mock-up testing, and a variety of additional sustainable features.
“The New York Times Building will be a vibrant piece of architecture, treading lightly on the natural environment,” said Bruce Fowle, FAIA, LEED, Senior Principal, FXFOWLE ARCHITECTS, PC, “The building is simple in form, yet simultaneously graceful and adventurous.
Do cross-cultural projects collaborations such as the NYT with Renzo Piano Studio and FXFOWLE work better than single-firm projects?
“What role did the United Federation of Teachers play in investing in the land and flipping it to make$?How will this project contribute toi creating affordable housing?
Even projec ts designated as affordable bypass huge segments of the hom eless population. There are currently more than 10, 000 homeless veterans on the streets of NYC now! 350,000 nationwide on any given day!”
