Situated in the heart of Lower Manhattan’s World Trade Center district, the Fulton Street Transit Center is designed to be a catalyst for the redevelopment of this area. Handling an average of 275,000 passengers per day and linking 9 train lines, the station is one of New York City’s busiest underground transit interchanges.

The central feature of the transit station is a truncated cone supporting a hyperbolic parabaloid cable-net structure, developed in partnership with artist James Carpenter. This cable net supports a filigree metal inner skin, geometrically optimized to capture and distribute the year round daylight to the deepest levels of the transit center and provide a more intuitive wayfinding method.

What Do You Think?

“How about glass platform doors. Also, given the high cost of this real estate, why let the air rights go to waste? With apartment / office space rates as high as they are in Manhattan a 90-story structure atop the new transit hub could be quickly filled generating additional revenue to help finance the project.”
