Grimshaw has designed a new line of street furniture for New York City, including 3300 bus shelters, 330 newsstands, and 20 automatic public toilets, to be installed throughout the five boroughs.

The designs combine the twin virtues of durability and transparency, and are capable of withstanding an unremitting street environment while simultaneously blending into the urban landscape with minimal visual and spatial intervention. For example, the bus shelter rests lightly on the sidewalk with only two connections to the ground, and the fully glazed rear panel and simple cantilevered roof allow clear views to the street facades. “The concerns about vandalism or screening are no different that the current condition. Frankly, considering how lucrative this contract was, they look rather bland and likely to wear poorly. It doesn't look like any new attempts at wayfinding or information graphics were considered for the shelters, or subordinated to the advertising. ”
