The new street furniture will provide a new icon for New York and subtly unify the streetscape.
What Do You Think?
“The design achieves 2 goals: simple and affordable. It makes me wonder if the money could have been better appropriated to improving the bus service itself. What about graffiti though? I'm sure a little spray paint on the glass could ruin the sleekness.”

The historic High Line rail structure offers a grand, public promenade that can be enjoyed by all residents and visitors in New York City.
What Do You Think?
“I like the idea of making use of the industrial infrastructure - using it as a catalyst for new real estate development is definitely a positive thing. That is probably less costly than dismantling the whole thing. Was there a study done to look at real estate value increases if the highline was removed versus developing it in this way? Couldn't all those things in the mission statement of revealing that significant part of the city's industrial past be accomplished with keeping only a four block section and landmarking it? Just curious. I live on the west side too, and there are no people of color shown in your renderings - those are my neighbors on 10th! i hope they can use it. thanks! ”

New York Times Building
Renzo Piano/FXFOWLE Architects
image
The design incorporates a transparent glass tower screened by planes of glazed ceramic tubes that seem to float above the street.
Do cross-cultural projects collaborations such as the NYT with Renzo Piano Studio and FXFOWLE work better than single-firm projects?
“What role did the United Federation of Teachers play in investing in the land and flipping it to make$? How will this project contribute toi creating affordable housing? Even projec ts designated as affordable bypass huge segments of the hom eless population. There are currently more than 10, 000 homeless veterans on the streets of NYC now! 350,000 nationwide on any given day!”

Remsen Yard, a maintenance facility for NYC’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), supports both its water and sewer operations.
What Do You Think?
“Albright-Knox style rotunda with stairs would suit all managedd facilities as long as industrial style Remsen projecs are kept wholesome, to the view of passerbys. wt. . . . . . prosze widac ta daleko jest nie-sobie do dlugo rzeczy do dlugo masz w cierpliwy raz. The Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park
Cook + Fox Architects
image
The Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park aims to be the first Platinum level LEED-certified building in New York City.
How can a building respond to its environment (including you)?
“I'm curious how the line was drawn between doing the most to save energy and designing lighting for the building to "create a night time presence".”

Poe Park

The Poe Park Visitor Center is an educational facility to support the surrounding community.
What Do You Think?
“This design is extremely too retro. It's a return to Philip Johnson in the 50's. The proposed building should really be designed more in synch with the social demographics of the South Bronx. It will definatley seem out of place if built.”

Memorial & Towers
image
Towers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 and the memorial designs will collectively reshape the World Trade Center site by 2012.
What Do You Think?
“I think that a more "uniform" archiecture in this unique site instead of this "DisneyLand" of architectural styles and visions would have been really better. It seems now a fake composition of layers from different times and concepts totally diffrent from the original WTC that was coherent with itself. That kind of vision was done by Libeskind and the other competition entrees but now has been completely changed and has lost his unity.”

What Do You Think?
“Alas, a building which posseses an artistic and transcendental quality. I think this is a refreshing winner for NYC. It will bring a much needed breath of fresh air to the city's saturated rows of concrete squarish buildings in this part of town (Chelsea).”

West 8 proposed an extensive and coherent design for this 2nd park for New York.
What do you find interesting in the park designs that should be explored further?
“I have often thought that Governor's Island could be dedicated to the Eldery and to homeless youth. These are the most vulnerable citizens in NYC so an Island would be a safe haven. •Excellent re-use/re-habilitation potential for of the existing historic architecture • plus some child and geriatric services • in a beautiful public park. • Assign each child a resident "grandparent"; give everyone the support they need. Dreamy.”

West Side Rail Yards
Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA)

MTA selects Related Companies/Goldman Sachs to develop the West Side Rail Yards after the collapse of the Tishman Speyer agreement.
What Do You Think?
“For far too long this strip of Manhattan's west side has sat desolate and underutilized. Today is a monumental and exciting occasion as we take the first official step towards developing this land. I look forward to the important work yet ahead where, through the City's land use review process, we will work to seek and incorporate public input to make sure the development plans meet community goals such as creating new permanently affordable housing, successful open space and critical public infrastructure.”

Fulton Street Transit Center
Downtown Manhattan
image
The Fulton Street Transit Center is designed to be a catalyst for the redevelopment of this area.
What Do You Think?
“How about glass platform doors. Also, given the high cost of this real estate, why let the air rights go to waste? With apartment / office space rates as high as they are in Manhattan a 90-story structure atop the new transit hub could be quickly filled generating additional revenue to help finance the project.”

New Housing New York
Phipps Rose Dattner Grimshaw
image
A competition for sustainably designed mixed-income, mixed-use affordable housing, NHNY has the potential to invigorate the local community and the city’s housing providers.
How important do you think LEED certification is to establishing a project's "green" credentials?
“What is most important about LEED, is not what a great method for sustainable architecture evaluation it is. In fact, most of us architects have several doubts on how a point checklist can be able to evaluate architecture. The most relevant aspect of the LEED movement, in my opinion, is that it is the first mainstream recognition for sustainable practices in buildings. What makes LEED certification so important is that it establishes a common ground for everyone, from a teacher to a businessman, to be able to point their fingers to buildings and say- That is a real sustainable building.”

CaVaLa Park

This ½ acre park, once a parking lot under NYCDOT and Port Authority jurisdiction, will soon become a green and welcoming gateway to Lower Manhattan.
What Do You Think?
“A new green space in such a densely developed locality is always great for health and social interaction if designed well and the public get to use it properly. The irony of the picture is that the woman laying down on the grass will probably be moved on for doing so or prohibited by fencing around the grass. Even if she was somehow allowed to engage in whatever recreation she is doing, would everyone have this right (e.g homeless, teenagers)? ”

What Do You Think?
